Narrative:
This is a get-away property about an hour and
a half
from Richmond in Lunenburg County. Since
it is near the South edge of Lunenburg County, it
is only about 30 miles from the Virginia-North
Carolina border.
I took the photos on the next two pages as I
walked into the woods about 1000 feet. I think
those photos give a faithful impression of what
you can see almost anywhere on this land. Many
of the oldest trees are
more than two feet in
diameter and probably 75 feet tall. Some of them
are so large it would be difficult for even two
people to reach around them. They seem to be
mostly oaks, hickory, beech and poplar with
pines interspersed among them.
One of the nicest things about this property is
that the old trees have stifled the growth of the
underbrush. There are hardly any vines and
briars. You can look way ahead in the woods.
It's a pleasure to walk in this forest.
The trees here are probably worth several
hundred thousand dollars to any timber
merchant or logger. We are extremely lucky
that this owner is willing to leave the trees when
he sells the land. Most of the owners cut all
the trees for the money and then sell the
"cut-over" land with nothing but stumps and
debris from the tree limbs.
